I majored in English and then got a Master's in Education. I am a high school teacher, and I love my job. However, I would never, ever recommend it to anyone. The simple truth is that the economic hardships of being a teacher simply aren't worth it. After 30 years, i am still jealous of friends who breathe easy every month and don't live in mortal fear of the brakes needing to be repaired or some other issue that we will have to turn to credit to pay for. My wife and I are both in six figures because we have taught for so long, but even so with a family of 5 the financial repercussions of our career choices are myriad. If you major in English, go to law school or something. However, I would REALLY recommend not majoring in it and keeping it as a hobby.
