Hey Nicole. I think that the issues are complex, of course. I also will tell ya that i began taking a medication called setraline a while back for anxiety, but after donsulting with my doctor I have dropped it. It helped me a lot while I was on it and I know I can get back on if need be, and that is a comforting thought. Just today, I carefully brought this up with my students. I stated at first that I am fully aware that mental health issues vary greatly form person to persn and I was in no way insinuating that medication and therapy weren't valuable and necessary for some. I was saying that I believe we are witnessing a kind of reverse placebo effect. Kids are being constantly baraged with thoughts that they are stressed out, and it becomes self-fulfilling. I truly think that not enough has been done to shift education given the landscape. I see the consistent emphasis on stress and mental health as lurching around in the dark. I will say that I think the current climate has given kids more comfort in discussing mental health issue, which is good. I just think that if we made REAL changes instead of just yelling "You are stressed and sick " (exaggeration) we would be serving our young people better and meeting their needs in a more tangible way.
